Sometimes, we want to compare two groups to see which has a greater proportion of something. One way to do this is by using percentages.
Let’s look at this using an example.
Example 1
Class A: 25 out of 34 students walk to school.
Class B: 30 out of 40 students walk to school.
Which class has a greater proportion of students walking to school?
Worked Solutions:
Class A: \( \frac{25}{34} \times 100\% \approx 73.53\% \approx 73.5\% \)
Class B: \( \frac{30}{40} \times 100\% = 75\% \)
Since 75% > 73.5%, Class B has a greater proportion of students walking to school.
